Christ Church Hawthorn’s 170th Anniversary
Sunday 19th November 2023
A huge thank you to everyone who came along to celebrate our 170th anniversary. By God’s grace, Christ Church Hawthorn has been serving the local community since 1853!
We kicked off the day with a historical church service by candlelight, aiming to replicate how church was 170 years ago.
We then celebrated with a range of activities for the kids such as face painting, petting zoo, jumping castle, craft and pony rides. We had some wonderful locals who came together to create a community market, while being entertained by some of the local music groups who rehearse in our halls during the week.
A scrumptious lunch was provided with a sausage sizzle, homemade cakes and preserves, slushies and rainbow fairy floss.
We thank God for turning on the weather for us and for all that He has provided our community over the last 170 years!
It all started when…
A group of local citizens, including the Creswick family of “The Hawthorns”, met to establish two local institutions - a church and a school. This led to Governor Latrobe, on 19th November 1853, laying foundation stones for both Christ Church Hawthorn and also the school that is now known as Hawthorn West Primary School.
